Ramp up your soccer skills or shop up a storm – you can do it all at Jewel City

Jewel City has firmly entrenched itself as the place to be in the Johannesburg CBD, not only for residents, businesses and retail buffs but budding soccer stars and aspiring skateboarders. The thriving precinct offers a hive of activities for the whole family.

Divercity Urban Property Group is a proud supporter and funder of the Ithemba Upliftment Foundation – a registered not-for-profit organisation that provides supplementary community services to people in the precincts in which Divercity invests. Besides its holiday care and sporting clinics, it also organises regular events such as arts festivals or community clean-ups.

The Ithemba Upliftment Foundation’s Children’s Holiday Programme may have just finished, but there is still so much more for youngsters to look forward to.

On the first Saturday of each month, starting in May (to be confirmed), children under the age of 18 can enjoy the Ithemba Foundation Youth Soccer Clinic, which will offer them free training and mentoring by former professional soccer players. This exciting clinic will be held at Jewel City’s Fives Futbol.

But that is not all: in September, the clinic will culminate in the Ithemba Upliftment Foundation Inter-Building Soccer Tournament, a fun weekend where any building within the proximity of Jewel City can register a team to face off against other teams in a friendly tournament, at the same venue.

If you prefer boards to balls and grinds to goals, then the Ithemba Upliftment Foundation Skateboard Clinic will be right up your alley. Dates for this feature at Jewel City are still to be confirmed, so watch this space.

Also, adding to the fun and variety of the Jewel City, Divercity recently introduced two new retailers, adding to the many offerings already being enjoyed in the precinct. Shoe retailer Rage, and fast-food chicken joint Pedro’s have both made their grand debut in the beloved Jewel City neighbourhood.

So, if you love shoes, you need to check out Rage, where a wide selection of styles and sizes to fit all tastes can be found. And if you love chicken and are looking for a quick bite to eat, then Pedro’s has you covered with its selection of delicious grilled chicken, and a variety of sides. Plus, they use only the freshest ingredients.

Our impact

More compact cities – enabled through the kind of development that Diversity advances – are associated with substantially lower greenhouse gas emissions, better land-use, and energy and resource efficiency, based on research 1 we’ve done with the Green Building Council South Africa (GBSCA) and Arup. Divercity has a commitment to minimising greenhouse gas emissions and is already supporting climate change mitigation through a range of measures, such as rooftop solar arrays, energy and water efficient design in all of our buildings and EDGE rating of all new developments.

Our impact

Through our Ithemba Upliftment Foundation, we are contributing to early childhood development, enabling hundreds of young children to receive quality education at Daycare Centres in our precnits. This is in addition to the widened access to formal education facilities that are part of our developments, and our efforts in supporting lifelong learning through supporting adult education.

As the cost of renewable energy generation capacity becomes more accessible and affordable, we are integrating these technologies more broadly across our residential portfolio. Divercity is focussed on eco-responsible housing as a viable means to contribute to sustainable and environmentally friendly urban development – through rigorous adherence to green building standards, including the use of energy efficient LED lights, rooftop solar arrays, energy efficient hot water generation and energy efficient building design.

Our impact

Our partnerships empower us to champion progressive policy that supports sustainable development. One impactful example of such a partnership is our work with Green Building Council South Africa (GBSCA) and Arup, the global multi-disciplinary firm, on a research project on the enormous environmental and economic costs of the current dynamic of urban sprawl in Johannesburg. Through this project, we developed actionable recommendations for policymakers, investors and other stakeholder groups.
